Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

This course will enable participants to enhance their skills in management of critically ill pediatric patients experiencing a cardiopulmonary event. PALS emphasizes the importance of gathering information to be able to recognize infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; information and strategies to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children; and the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in respiratory failure, shock or cardiopulmonary arrest.

Prerequisites:

  • Knowledge of ECG interpretation
  • Current Heart & Stroke BLS certification

SimKIDS is excited to invite you to register for Paediatric Clinical Advanced Resuscitation and Emergency Simulation by SimKIDS (PediCARESS) workshop at The Hospital for Sick Children’s Simulation Centre in Toronto!

PediCARESS (Paediatric Interprofessional Critical Advanced Resuscitation and Emergency Simulation by SimKIDS) is designed to provide healthcare professionals with an opportunity to practice and demonstrate advanced resuscitation skills, including procedural, medical, and crisis resource management skills in the context of acute paediatric emergencies.

The program utilizes a blended approach, combining asynchronous online learning with in-person simulation-based training. The in-person programming includes a combination of hands-on procedural skill stations, and immersive, interactive, high-fidelity, and team-based simulation scenarios.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Advanced resuscitation skills for neonatal and paediatric emergencies
  • Crisis resource management in team-based simulation scenarios
  • High-acuity, low-occurrence skills practice through immersive, real-life simulations

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognize and manage emergencies including neonatal, CNS, toxicology, shock, trauma, and more
  • Utilize critical tools like video laryngoscopy, manual defibrillators, and procedural sedation techniques
  • Manage complications with tracheostomy, G-tube, RSI, and trauma resuscitation

  • Regularly encounter paediatric emergencies in clinical settings

FREE Critical Care and Acute Care Nursing Programs

As part of the Northern Ontario Health Human Resources Strategy, Ontario Health North East & North West have partnered with the Ministry of Health and the Michener Institute of Education at University Health Network (UHN) to provide funded spots for sponsored nurses working at northern Ontario hospitals in their Critical and Acute Care Nursing Programs.

The Critical Care Nursing Certificate Program will provide learners with the advanced knowledge, specialized skills and abilities to practice competently and safely within a critical care environment. The innovative design integrates the clinical experience throughout 11 weeks of synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning, allowing students to integrate new knowledge into their critical care practice on an ongoing basis.

The Acute Care Nursing Certificate Program will provide learners with the advanced knowledge, specialized skills, and abilities to practice competently and safely within an acute care environment. The innovative design integrates the clinical experience throughout 8 weeks of synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning, allowing students to integrate new knowledge into their acute care practice on an ongoing basis.

Ontario Health introduced the ED Nursing Education, Retention, and Workforce Program in August 2023 with an initial focus on increasing access to Virtual Training Modules (instructor-led courses delivered virtually) and Specialty Training Fund (ED nurse certificate programs and specialty education/training). This Program, including the Virtual Training Modules, is now available to all EDs in Ontario.

Paediatrics Continuing Medical Education

This education is developed by the Children's Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre.  The Continued Medical Education committee comprises of paediatric staff specialists, academic paediatricians, family physicians, nurse educators, and community paediatricians (regional partners). As part of the Paediatrics Continuing Medical Education, they offer the Pediatric Regional Outpatient Program (PROP) which includes Case-Based Lecture Series. To participate individuals must sign up free of charge, and create an individual login. They are also able to facilitate simulation and point of care workshops as arranged via your departmental leads.

But I Don't Do Maternity Care! Prenatal Essentials (Online Workshop)

Updated and improved, the But I Don't Do Maternity Care! educational series for family physicians who don't do deliveries is back! This workshop focuses on preconception and early prenatal care and was developed in partnership between the Vancouver Division of Family Practice and UBC CPD.

By the end of the workshop learners will be able to:

  • Identify key issues in preconception care;
  • Describe the key tasks to accomplish in the first and second prenatal visits;
  • Practice using Pathways as a tool for early prenatal care;
  • Support your patients to find a maternity provider;
  • Identify what tests to order in early prenatal care;
  • Provide prenatal genetic screening information and arrange screening in a timely manner; and
  • Connect with multidisciplinary maternity teams in your community.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Network is hosting their second biennial education conference in September this year.
